Summertime Fun

Bodi was honored back in February by the Dragonfly Foundation.  They asked Bodi to be their honorary Dragonfly for their Gala.  It was such an unbelievable evening.  Here are some photos from that evening.20170211 Dragonfly Gala © Malinda Hartong

A HUGE thank you goes out to Aleisa Yusko for hand painting Bodi’s shoes, bowtie, and suspenders.  They were absolutely perfect and amazing.  You are so very talented!

Bodi is absolutely loving his summer.  He wakes up everyday and looks outside and exclaims, “Mommy, it’s a sunny day!  Play outside please?”  If the weather isn’t so sunny he says, “Oh no, rain rain go AWAY!!!!”  His days consist of what every little boys do.  Running, playing, being silly, getting dirty, chasing bunnies, playing with friends, swimming, riding cars, falling down, eating popcicles, and learning something new.  He keeps us on our toes every minute.  We have been blessed by the Dragonfly Foundation with many opportunities to attend different events.  We have been to 4 Red’s games and Bodi just loves it!

Cousin time!

During all of the fun this summer we had been anticipating his scans.  He had them on July the 12th and the 13th was a followup with oncology.  He was so brave and let the nurses take all of his vitals without even wincing.  He held my hand the whole time and just melted me.  We are so thrilled to say that there has been no change in the scans from the last one.  We are now being moved to a yearly scan!!!  Yay Bodi!  We will still go in for blood checkups, but this is a huge step for him!

Please continue to pray for our Brave Bodi!

2 years old

So much has happened since July of last year!  Bodi is talking so much more, he has been successfully potty trained, he turned 2 this week, and he had some really great results from his scans this week!  The MRI showed no change in his tumor.  The doctor reassured me that that is really great news!  The doctors were absolutely thrilled to see Bodi and how big he has gotten!

Another exciting event happening soon is the Dragonfly Gala.  The Dragonfly foundation is an amazing organization that helps children going through this journey smile and feel comforted.  We are blessed to be a dragonfly family.  Well this year they have chosen Bodi to spotlight at their event.  He has had a camera crew following him around and they are putting together a video about Bodi’s story to show at the Gala.  I will definitely post the finished product on this page at the end of February.

I’m going to use pictures to show how cute and fun Bodi is.

Time is flying by

Has it really been 3 months already?  Bodi is growing and growing.  He is so sweet and a real charmer.

He is saying about 40 words and learning more every day.  He is obsessed with playing outside and is just starting to learn to play with others.

someone took his spot

We call him “The Bodi Show” because he is always entertaining everyone he meets.  I am predicting now he will either be an actor or a comedian.  He loves to make people laugh!

We went in last week for Bodi’s scans.  This is always a hard week for us as it  is a reminder of the worst time in our lives. Luckily my sister was in town and hung out with Bryan and me while we waited for Bodi to wake up in the recovery room.  He was a CHAMP both days and it was like nothing had even happened.  Anesthesia?  What anesthesia?

The test results have come in and we are THRILLED to say that Bodi’s tumor is continuing to shrink.  There is also no evidence of disease!  Bodi’s scan schedule has been moved to every 6 months!!!  We will continue to have clinic visits every 3 months to draw blood for labs.

We could not be happier!  We know that we have everyone to thank who has been praying for Bodi.  We also thank God everyday for our miracle baby and for all of Bodi’s guardian angels who watch over him and us.

every little thing is gonna be alright

Yay Bodi!

I have to apologize that it has taken me almost a week to write this.  We had our followup on Monday the 4th.  Bodi’s tumor has shrunk a tiny bit.  Any type of shrinkage is cause for celebration!!!  We don’t have all of the results back, but the ones we do, look great!!!  He will be back for the next set of scans in 3 months and if those go well we will go to every 6 months!  Bodi is such a big boy that he is literally off of the growth chart!!!!  The doctor’s were so excited to see how well Bodi is doing.

We had such a fun day at Children’s.  If you haven’t seen the pictures I’ll post a few here.  This time last year we were inpatient getting treatment, but this year we were able to bring a few smiles to some precious faces.

The anniversary

It has been a little over a month since I have posted.  Bodi is growing so fast.  We are enjoying every single second with our little miracle.  His new favorite things to do are go outside and visit his doggy friend Daisy, go to the park, and play with his cousins, friends, and of course siblings.  His favorite thing at the park is the slide.  The bigger the better.  He gets so excited when he sees one!  He is such a silly boy and loves to laugh.  He loves to play peek a boo, loves when we chase him around, and he absolutely loves to eat.  I know every parent is partial to their child, but I know he is the BEST!  IMG_3937IMG_4054IMG_4010

Better get the windex!

In my last post I spoke about Bodi’s procedure to fix his aspiration problem. We had a followup swallow study last week.  I went into it knowing that Bodi was still having an issue, and I was right.  The study showed no improvement while he drinks liquids.  It doesn’t matter what type of cup or bottle he uses, there is still deep penetration.  We are waiting for Bodi’s oncologist and ENT to decide where to go from here.  The good news is that he has not gotten sick yet, is gaining weight and thriving.  The speech pathologist has given me the necessary tools I need to proceed until then.  I honestly can not say enough about her.  She has been a light at the end of the tunnel in regards to this problem.  She has made such an effort to come see Bodi after surgery and constantly keeping in touch with me.  She has made a huge difference for me and completely eased my mind in this situation, and for that we are so grateful.

Although March has been a pretty warm and cheery month, I have had one date looming over my head.  Bodi’s one year diagnosis date.  March 29th.   I find myself daydreaming and stuck in the days before my sister and I drove him to the hospital.  I can remember sitting in my sister’s guest room crying because Bodi was not doing well.  As a first time Mom, I didn’t know what to do.  His tummy was hard as a rock, he wasn’t eating, he was constantly crying, wasn’t sleeping and was all around miserable.  My sister and I tried every method to soothe him.  NOTHING worked.  I remember calling and texting Bryan to please get on the next flight to California because I didn’t know what to do.  We decided to take him to an urgent care where the doctor examined him and decided it was colic.  After showing me the football hold, he sent my sister, Bodi and me home and said if it gets any worse the next step would be the ER.  The next night around dinner time I finally got Bodi to lay down.  I put the monitor right in front of his face and made it upstairs to find my sister had made my favorite meal.  As soon as I finished the last bite I heard Bodi choking.  I ran downstairs and scooped him up.  We went straight to the emergency room.  I held my breath the entire time and choked back tears.  I was terrified.

As we rushed into the Emergency room, I stopped and scanned the room.  It was PACKED.  My heart sank knowing how long this would take.  The window opened and they asked us to come in the check in room to evaluate what was going on.  I told the nurse all of the symptoms and she felt his belly.  I could immediately see she was concerned.  Bodi was crying the whole time and she grabbed something called sweeties.  She dipped his paci in the sugar-water and he was immediately quiet.  She turned to the other nurse and said to get us a room.  The check in nurse quickly snapped that there was 4 month old who has been waiting for 3 hours who should go first.  She cut her off and basically ushered us right back to a room.  I was relieved that we didn’t have to wait and so grateful to this woman who took my concern to heart.  She said it may be a bowel blockage so we had to get x-rays immediately.  We knew that the slew of testing would mean that he would not be able to eat for a while so I tried to nurse Bodi.  He wasn’t having it.

Waiting for the x-rays

IMG_0043

Snuggling his Ra Ra

After what seemed like forever, they came to put an iv in Bodi and then took us to get an x-ray.  I remember carrying Bodi, who was wrapped up in a blanket with only his head peeking out,  through the halls of Oakland Children’s hospital.  I remember being scared, but not having any clue as to what they would find.  I thought maybe a bowel blockage.  I laid him on the table and talked to him while they took his x ray.  He was so good and it took no time at all.  We went back to the room and waited for the doctor to come in.  And waited, and waited.  My sister had been on the phone with Bryan to keep him in the loop.  I remember turning the recorder on my phone to make sure I got what the doctor told us.  I am never good about remembering details and I didn’t want to forget exactly what was said when relaying the information to Bryan.  I have the whole conversation taped.  His liver was so large that it was pushing his diaphragm up resulting in lower lung capacity.  His organs were all smooshed, making his stomach so small that he wasn’t hungry.  They had found a large mass next to his spine, which was curved.  His spleen was also very large.  They were admitting him to the hematology and oncology floor.  I looked at my sister and just started to bawl.  By this time it was around 4 am in Cincinnati.  I called Bryan and told him what they found.  He was getting on the next flight out.  From that moment on my sister kicked into high gear.  She asked all the questions, she called my family.  She literally held me up when I fell on the floor, she sat in his room with me.  The next morning they sent us to the PICU where they took phenomenal care of us.  They kept Bodi comfortable.  When his oncologist found out we were from Cincinnati she literally jumped for joy.  She went to school with the best oncologist who was practicing at Cincinnati Children’s hospital.  She and the Chief of Staff did everything in their power to get us back home to Cincinnati.  The rest is history.

If a one year diagnosis date isn’t enough, it is also the day of Bodi’s scans.  It’s going to be a very hard day for us because the memories continue to flood us.  I know that he will do great and the results will be improved from the last scans.  Please keep my little guy in your prayers.  We are looking forward to taking Bodi to the park to celebrate how far he has come.  IMG_4137

With out all of you praying, checking in on us, and loving us I don’t know where we would be.  We have had so much support and it means the world to us.  We love you all and just want you to know how appreciative we are.

IMG_4138

Hello everyone!  Sorry I haven’t posted in awhile!  Let me start by saying we are enjoying every single moment we have with our families!  Bodi is officially one years old!  We had a celebration in Floroda with Nana Sue, Poppy and all of their friends.  Then we had a small celebration at our house with just our siblings and my parents.  Bodi had so much fun and I can tell he loves all of the attention!!!!  I was so excited to see him smash his face in his cake, but he did not enjoy it at all.  😝.

Bodi is growing so fast.  He loves to wave at everyone he sees, he loves to explore his surroundings, he is dancing every chance he gets and is just the sweetest little guy.

We are on our way to Children’s now to have Bodi’s surgery.  This will hopefully fix the problem and we can move forward without worrying that he is aspirating.  Please pray for Bodi and that this surgery will will be a success.

The past month has been very long.  Bodi has had several doctors visits, surgeries, scans and check ups.  Through every visit Bodi has been his happy, smiley self.  He charms everyone he sees and definitely flirts with all of the nurses.

We have been waiting for Bodi’s scan results for what seems like a year. In actuality it only took a few days.  The MRI came back and showed that his tumor is still shrinking!  Great news!  The MIBG scan came back and shows no sign of cancer!!! Yes I said it, NO. SIGN. OF. CANCER!!!! We are so elated and finally able to breathe.  Bodi will be scanned every 3 months to monitor his tumor.
We know that God has heard all of your prayers and has answered them!  Thank you to everyone who continues to pray for Bodi.  We feel them and appreciate all of you.  Cancer is an ugly beast that has definitely changed our lives forever. I ask that you continue to pray for all of the children, men and women who are still battling this awful disease.

Busy 2 weeks

We hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and spent time with those they love!  Bodi had a wonderful first Christmas!  He got to spend lots of time with our family!

Bodi has a very busy schedule for the next two weeks.  He has an MRI, a MIBG scan, a swallow study and an oncology check up.  Please keep him in your prayers and that his scans continue to show a decrease in the size of his tumor.

This Year has definitely shown our family how important each other are and how precious life really is.  Bodi’s Nana and Poppy were in a bad accident right  before Christmas and thank God they are okay!  Then a few days later we learned of a very dear friend’s very unexpected passing. Please keep Mary and her family in your prayers.  She is a dear friend to Nana in Florida.  She will be  greatly missed.

Bodi’s cousins are in town and we are loving EVERY minute!!!!!

Well he might not be enjoying every minute…..

The picture shows what happened after Koa very gently placed his hand on Bodi’s shoulder!!!!

He’s up!

the surgery went really well!  We are up in our room now and he is charming all of the nurses!

He’s been introduced to bubbles and LOVES them!  Thank you for all of your prayers!

Tomorrow

Hey everyone!

Just a quick request.  Please say an extra prayer for my sweet little man.  He is having surgery tomorrow to fix the hole above his vocal chords.
